I will draw up a scientific assessment of the programs DENIS and 2MASS for various aspects of stellar physics, going from the discovery of field brown dwarfs to the exhaustive exploration of young and low luminosity objects in Giant Molecular Clouds. Several new projects of near and mid infra-red surveys will be presented, in particular the SIRA project (IR survey in Antarctica) having for objective the exploration of large sky areas in the L' (3.8 microns) and M' (4.8 microns) bands.
