After a presentation of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability, and its role in
the type II supernovae, I present original analytical work on the linear
phase of the IRT for compressible fluids, for constant or time variable
accelerations, and on the three-dimensional non-linear phase of the IRT
single modes. Comparisons with numerical simulations are discussed.
