We plan to observe 18 spiral galaxies characterized by their unusually blue central star formation using the 4-m telescope with the IRIM detector to determine the near-infrared characteristics of the star- forming hotspots. JHK band observations are useful supplements to optical observations because the dust obscuration is less than 1/10 optical at these wavelengths. We will use the IR luminosities to determine the masses and ages of the star formation clumps based on cluster evolution models. The program galaxies have central regions that are among the bluest in The Color Atlas of Galaxies (Wray 1988). Half are included in the Arsenault (1989) list of galaxies with nuclear H(alpha) emission. One-third of the galaxies are classified as peculiar spirals. The proposed galaxies fall into two categories: interacting systems, and isolated spirals with star formation ridges in which the inner region is significantly brighter than the rest of the disk. The near-IR observations will help shed light on nuclear star formation, since the proposed galaxies are not strongly barred and bars are usually associated with strong central activity.
