Results are presented for image-tube spectrophotometric scans (4000-8600 A) of the east and west ansae of the nebula and of two points in the bright ring north of the central star. Previous observations of stratification effects and ionization and excitation differences are discussed, and the observational procedure is described. An attempt is made to derive ion concentrations, electron temperatures, and densities from the observed line intensities, and large variations are noted in the H-alpha/N II ratio, which ranges from about 2.0 in the ansae to about 0.03 in the bright ring. The stratification in NGC 7009 is shown to have a bilateral symmetry, with low excitation regions along the major axis and high excitation regions on the minor axis, and is compared with the stratification effects in other nebulae.
