It is shown that strong and dominant energy conditions cannot be violated in inhomogeneous cosmological models, but negative effective 'pressure' may arise. The strong, weak, and dominant energy conditions in the singularity theorems of Hawking, Penrose, and Ellis are described, and an expression is derived for the full energy-momentum tensor in the case when inhomogeneities are of a stochastic nature and large-scale rotation is absent. Comparison with the usual form of the energy-momentum tensor for a perfect fluid shows that the effect of inhomogeneities gives rise to negative effective pressure and the strong and dominant energy conditions are automatically satisfied if the constant mean density is not less than zero. It is concluded that a singularity must appear in inhomogeneous cosmological models.
