Mass loss by outstreaming from the surface of hot stars is considered, and relevant information provided by ultraviolet and visible-range observations, especially recent observations obtained by satellite, are discussed. P-Cyg Line studies are surveyed. Possible causes of mass loss are described, and the question of whether mass loss is more or less continuous is examined. Three models - the cool model of Castor et al. (1975), the warm wind model of Rogerson and Lamers (1975), and the hot corona model of Hearn (1975) - are reviewed. Experimental findings that might permit choice of mechanism are considered.
