The Chapman NaO plus O chemiexcitation process is held responsible for mid-latitude Na nightglow. Sodium D-line profiles obtained from a pressure scanned Fabry-Perot interferometer indicate that Na layer temperatures reach mid-winter highs (approximately 250 K) and mid-summer lows (approximately 150 K). Behavior of the nightglow is variable, both rising and falling, and near-constant in intensity. A dissociation kinetic energy of 46 plus or minus 4 meV is obtained by broadening the D-line profiles. This observation is in good agreement with the chemiexcitation (rather than the dissociative recombination) hypothesis for the nightglow phenomenon.
