Magnetic data giving evidence of hydromagnetic wave activity during the
time of the SAR arc (subauroral red arc) of 17-18 December 1971 were
analyzed to determine the amount of available energy for SAR arc
formation. The observations support the possibility of kinetic Alfven
waves producing the electron heating needed for formation of the arc.
