The paper enumerates five basic expected signatures of the reconnection process in the magnetotail, including (1) southward polarity of B(z) beyond X-type neutral line, (2) thinning of plasma sheet beyond X-type neutral line, (3) northward polarity of B(z) earthward of X-type neutral line, (4) expansion of plasma sheet and earthward flow on earthward side of X-type neutral line, and (5) heating and acceleration of plasma. Agreements between expected and observed signatures are pointed out.
