Analyses of 19th century single tree rings indicate that natural 14C fluctuations of 20 ‰ over the 11-yr sunspot cycle have occurred in correlation with solar activity. Consequently, an additional error of at least +/-80 years is inevitable in the radiocarbon age determination of dating samples of lifetime one year.
