Scientific paper

The paper presents approximate calculations of the excitation and luminescence of doubly-charged molecular nitrogen and oxygen ions in the auroral zone. It is suggested that the emission data can be associated with the unidentified 3250-3300 A and 2420-2440 A bands. It is shown that the Auger process is the basic mechanism of N2(+) and O2(2+) formation in the auroral zone below 150 km.
