Consideration is given to the basic design and operation of the Mt. Hopkins multiple-mirror telescope which consists of six 1.8-meter Cassegrain reflecting telescopes placed about a single axis. A pair of auxiliary reflectors relays the six beams to a single focal plane. Particular attention is given to the optical components (primary and secondary mirrors, autoguider detector, beam combiner), the image alignment procedure, the optical support structure and control system, and the housing configuration. The instrumentation is discussed with reference to infrared photometry and low-resolution infrared spectroscopy, and high-resolution optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy of point sources.
