Toth's (1977) suggestion that the long-period oscillations of the solar atmosphere produce corresponding oscillations of the geomagnetic field is challenged by a spectral analysis of geomagnetic field data obtained the same days but at different locations than the data from Tihany, Hungary studied by Toth. Data from Durham, New Hampshire; Girardville, Quebec; and Siple Station, Antarctica for November 9-11, 1975 were examined by fitting a power law frequency dependence, but no evidence for a significant peak at a period of approximately 2 hr 40 min was detected for either the Northern Hemisphere data or for the conjugate (Siple) data. The data from Hungary had revealed approximately 2 hr 40 min oscillations in the geomagnetic field data, and it is suggested that this period is a local effect.
