Solar activity is represented as the product of the total number of sunspot groups appearing during n days times their average lifetime. Examination of these parameters for all the cycles between 1874 and 1964 suggests that the average lifetime varies in an 80-year cycle. The total number of sunspot groups does not show this periodicity during the 80-year cycle but does vary over the 11-year cycle, while the lifetime remains fairly constant during the 11-year cycle. The total number increases over the period studied, and it is suggested that another solar activity cycle with a period of several hundred years might be responsible for this increase.
