VALUES of the ratio of total photographic absorption (A) to selective absorption (E) in our galaxy have been found by several investigators. Summaries of various investigations are given by Oort1 and van Rhijn2. The latter adopts a mean value of A/E1 = 8.2 (where E1 is photo-electric colour excess). For the Andromeda nebula, Stebbins and Whitford3 find A/E = 4.0.
