It is suggested that stellar associations are not 'new' systems characterized by low space density and consisting either of OB stars or T Tauri stars, but are instead incipient star clusters in the process of gravitational condensation from diffuse matter. Properties of star clusters and stellar associations are briefly discussed, and it is argued that T associations are the predecessors of OB associations.
