Digitized Mount Wilson sunspot data from 1917 to 1985 are analyzed to examine the growth and decay rates of sunspot group umbral areas. It is found that sunspot group growth and decay rates are distributed roughly symmetrically about a median rate of decay of a few microhemispheres/day. Percentage area change rates average 502 percent/day for growing groups and -45 percent/day for decaying groups, which are much greater than the corresponding values for plage magnetic field growth and decay. The median of the distribution of percentage sunspot group area change is at about -25 percent/day. The distribution for percentage decay rates differs from that of plages. Spot group daily precentage area increases for small groups are larger in absolute terms than percentage areas decreases. For large groups daily percentage decreases are larger than increases.
