The excess of luminosity of the moon when it stands in the earth's shadow is attributed to the impact of magnetic meteoritic dust, always present in the vicinity of the earth, concentrated and guided by the geomagnetic tail, onto the lunar surface. This bombardment also is able to account for the slowing of the cooling rate of lunar soil during eclipses. Danjon's hypothesis, relating the brightness of the eclipsed moon to solar activity, is explained by the variable extension of the geomagnetic tail as a function of solar activity, the tail not reaching the moon during periods of minimum activity.
