The paper critically reviews some recent developments on the problem of the merging of fields having arbitrary inclination with respect to one another, and shows that the assumption that the components of the two fields parallel to the X-type line be equal leads to strong constraints on the merging process. For example, it would suggest that day side reconnection should cease whenever the interplanetary field has a significant northward component. However, as Cowley (1974) has shown, in the case of inflow fields of unequal magnitude the z-fields and z-flows of the two inflow regions may be arbitrarily chosen. Some calculations are performed on matching convective region configurations for the large-scale flow external to the X line to appropriate diffusion region inner solutions. The results suggest that solutions for the external flow and the diffusion region exist in which the z-fields and z-flows may change by arbitrary amounts across the inflow regions, although a detailed match between the two solution regimes has not been demonstrated.
