The Jovian magnetosphere is intermediate between the earth's magnetosphere and that of pulsars. Unlike pulsars, Jupiter's field does not extend out to the speed-of-light cylinder (where corotation implies movement at the speed of light), and therefore it does not couple directly into the distant electromagnetic field or whirl a plasma at relativistic speeds. The dependence of the energy made available to the magnetospheric processes on the strength of the solar wind is calculated without knowledge of the details of the frictional interaction between the magnetosphere and the solar wind. The unsymmetrical magnetic field of the planet and the external field orientation supplied by the solar wind are used to characterize the periodicities in the streams of energetic particles.
