The article examines classifications of meteorite craters on the basis of various indicators such as the frequency of occurrence of craters as a function of dimensions, the nature of the gravity anomalies detected over crater, and the magnetic properties of rocks forming craters. A physical and mathematical model of the evolution of meteoritic structures is proposed which regards the lithosphere-asthenosphere mechanical system as consisting of a rigid upper mantle floating on a viscous substrate. Equilibrium of such a system in a gravitational field is studied for the two-dimensional case, and an equation describing the evolution of a depression is obtained. Some observed data are compared with predictions made with the model.
