Apparently, there are infinite number of time-like variables in the Wheeler-DeWitt equation in quantum gravity. This gives rise to an obvious conceptual difficulty and further becomes an obstacle if one wants to canonically third quantize the universe. In this paper, adopting York's gauge in the path-integral approach, quantum geometrodynamics is formulated so that it contains only a single time-like variable corresponding to the total volume of the universe.
