The PPM Star Catalogue is a reference star catalogue of positions and proper motions of 378,910 stars on the whole sky. It refers to the system of FK5, equator and equinox J2000. PPM can be regarded as a successor to the SAO catalogue, which for a quarter of a century represented the now obsolete B 1950, FK4 system. This paper gives some necessary information for the users of the PPM catalogue.
