The very existence of S0 galaxies which host bars puzzles theoreticians and observers for many decades now. The most accepted mechanism to form bars in galaxies is based on dynamical instabilities in ``cold'' stellar systems, i.e., those with low velocity dispersion. This mechanism can not explain the formation of bars in S0 galaxies since these are ``hot'' systems. In order to get some further insights on this issue, we are undertaking an observing program which consists of optical and infrared imaging, as well as spectroscopy, of a well suited sample of galaxies. Images are providing valuable information on the structure and stellar population of these systems, while spectra give us data on their dynamical evolution. These data is being analysed together with N--body simulations, giving us clues on the possible mechanisms that could form bars in these ``hot'' galaxies. Moreover, constraints on their evolution can be obtained which may have a substantial impact on the overall picture of formation and evolution of galaxies in the field and in dense environments.
