Based on single-site velocity measurements the first clear detection of solar-like oscillations in a red giant star is shown. The measured frequencies can be matched to a regular series of peaks if some frequencies are shifted by +/- 11.57 micro hertz (the daily alias). This is in good agreement with the radial modes from a pulsation model of xi Hya. However, the ambiguity of the frequencies is unclear due to a crowded power spectrum and because the mode lifetime is not known. A new high precision CCD linearity test is introduced, providing precisions on the CCD linearity at the 10 parts per million level.
