In connection with the study of an exceptional substorm event, Pellinen et al. (1982) found that a sudden brightening of an auroral arc was preceded by a high level of the solar wind-magnetosphere dynamo power for about 30 min. The present investigation is concerned with an understanding of this particular event on the basis of the current theoretical concepts of imperfect magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling due to enhanced convection in the magnetosphere. It is found that the present knowledge of imperfect coupling between the magnetosphere and the ionosphere can explain reasonably well the observation that a substorm after a prolonged quiet period can differ from typical substorms in terms of the low initial ionospheric conductivity associated with the quiet period.
