A study of type II solar radio bursts recorded at 160 MHz by the Culgoora radioheliograph during 1980 to 1982 shows that the radio emission occurs above Hα filaments rather than above Hα flares. This suggests that the type II radio emission most probably originates from within a coronal helmet streamer overlying the filament channel.
