It is shown that a universe with critical density omega equal to one which becomes dominated by relatively light, nonintercommuting strings at a red shift z(s) is practically indistinguishable from a universe filled with ordinary matter with omega equal to roughly 1/(2+z(s)). The existence of such strings can resolve the conflict between the omega = 1 prediction of inflationary cosmology and observations.
