An approximate equation is derived for the confidence limit on the angle between an outlier and an observed mean when sampling from a Fisher distribution. It is argued that this confidence limit should not be used by itself as a rejection criterion for palaeomagnetic data. Instead it is better used as a criterion for deciding whether effort should be expended in searching for a possible cause of error which would justify rejection of the observation.
