Scientific paper

In preparation for an ESA Accessment Study the parameters of a future Mars orbiter mission are investigated. In particular launch windows, interplanetary transfer orbits, Mars arrival dates and geometries, and Mars orbits are studied, some as function of particular launch windows. For the period 1986 through 1990 the areocentric elongation of Earth from Sun and the communication distance between Mars and Earth are calculated. It is concluded that the proposed mission could be performed using an ARIANE III launcher.
