With extensive and accurate p-mode data now available, we reconsider the problem of seismic calibration of the adiabatic part of the solar convective envelope, including the measurement of the He abundance and of the specific entropy, and testing the equation of state. Our approach is based on the direct fitting using the multiparametric families of envelope models and the differential-response technique, which allows transferring the surface boundary conditions of the oscillation equations downwards, to eliminate the uncertain effects of the near-surface layers.
