The existence of binary stars was discovered 200 years ago. Binaries were primarily observed as visual binaries, but other categories emerged: astrometric binaries, spectroscopic binaries, and eclipsing binaries. The observational characteristics of these objects are summarized, and the derivation of the physical parameters is briefly presented for each class.
