We discuss here compact binaries in which the orbital separation is small enough that mass is transferred from one star to the other. These systems are classified according to the nature of the primary: algols for ordinary stars, cataclysmic variables for white dwarfs, and X-ray binaries for black holes and neutron stars. These classes are often studied separately, even though the same physical processes occur in all objects; a global approach is most useful for understanding these objects and the physical processes.
