This document was found in a bundle of letters surfacing in 2001 in a file cabinet in the Edinburgh University Institute for Meteorology. The letters cover the period from 1964 to 1991; this text, undated, appears to date from 1972 or 1973. It was probably an aide-mémoire for presentation before the Geophysics National Committee of the Royal Society in London. James Paton was Director of the BAA Aurora Section from 1952 to 1973. His time as Director covered the great expansion of research into the upper atmosphere brought about by the International Geophysical Year (1957(1958), the International Year of Geophysical Cooperation (1959) and the International Years of the Quiet Sun (1964(1965).
