The still unknown transversity distribution, which is a chiral odd object, can only be measured in conjunction with a chiral odd fragmentation function. However, it can be for instance accessed in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) via the single spin azimuthal asymmetries for mesons off a transversely polarized target. Recent measurements of non-vanishing single spin azimuthal asymmetries off a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target by the HERMES experiment indicate that these chiral odd fragmentation functions are nonzero. These results are further confirmed by new data for semi-inclusive pion and kaon electroproduction from a longitudinally polarized deuteron target. Therefore large effects are expected for the upcoming HERMES measurements with a transversely polarized hydrogen target.
