We are carrying out a programme of non-linear, time-dependent calculations to study non-stationary accretion onto black holes which is directed towards two specific goals. The first is to calculate light curves and spectra for individual accreting black holes; the second, is to determine the characteristic properties of populations of these objects. We highlight our most interesting results and report on the present status of the project.
