This paper briefly reviews QSO absorption-line observations that constrain the properties of the low-redshift intergalactic medium, with emphasis on systems detected in the OVI doublet. Some comments are made on the baryonic content of and physical conditions of the IGM and their evolution with redshift. Radiatively cooling gas models are in good agreement with the Doppler parameters and column densities in the current sample of intervening OVI absorbers, which suggests that a substantial fraction of the OVI systems are tracing shock-heated gas cooling from an initial temperature >= 106 K.
