The early beginnings of the discipline are described starting from the
discovery of SCOX-1 and the x-ray background in 1962 and describing the
steps that led to the understanding of these surprising findings.
Emphasis is given to the study of binary x-ray sources and the nature of
the x-ray background, including recent results in the field.
