ALONG with the growing unification of the various branches of physics there has been a trend toward unifying our systems of units. Originally the various branches developed systems of units peculiar to each; but as the branches have overlapped and merged some special units have been discarded in favour of those related in a simple way to the units selected as fundamental. The joule, for example, is beginning to replace the calorie as a heat unit, and meteorologists are changing from the inch of mercury to the bar for barometric pressures.
