The plasma of the ionospheric F-region is characteristically modulated by the structure of the IMF. Using foF2 values for different ionosonde stations it can be shown that the maximum electron density of the F2-layer is controlled by the vertical component of the IMF in the solar-magnetospheric coordinate system. This effect, which can especially be detected during IMF sector boundary crossings, depends markedly on season, solar activity, and latitude.
