The article is a review of Dicke's work on the hypothetical quadrupole moment of the sun. There are presented: (1) the difficulties of the 19th century astronomy connected with the perihelion motion of Mercury, which led the astronomers to the first suspicion that the sun might have a quadrupole moment; (2) the historical pedigree and the field equations of the Brans-Dicke theory, together with the meaning of the solar quadrupole moment for this theory; (3) a theoretical model of structure of the sun with rapidly rotating core; (4) the experiment of Dicke and Goldenberg in which the sun's quadrupole moment was supposed to be measured; and (5) the experiment of Hill and coworkers, suggesting the absence of any meaningful quadrupole moment in the sun.
