In this UP2010 conference introduction, I discuss the various models of high-mass star formation with a view towards the physics by which the upper IMF and the upper mass limit would be determined in each model. I also list some of the fundamental questions regarding the upper end of the IMF and make some suggestions for observational searches for significant upper IMF variations.
