A general description is given of the Anglo-Australian telescope, located at Siding Spring Mountain, New South Wales, and commissioned in December 1974. The telescope follows the general design of the Kitt Peak telescope and has a working aperture of 153.3 inches, four focal ratios, and a mirror system consisting of two hyperboloids. The instrumentation is described with special attention given to the image-dissector scanner, which can obtain spectra of objects as faint as 21st magnitude. It is noted that the main fields of work for this telescope are observations of the galactic center, the Magellanic Clouds, globular clusters, peculiar objects, and the optical identification of radio sources in the Southern Hemisphere.
