The proposition given by Innanen and House (1970) to explain the persistence of old stellar groups in terms of successive close mutual approaches of stars having a common origin is tested systematically by numerical integration of orbits in Schmidt's (1965) potential. The method of the surface of a section is used to distinguish among the various types of orbits: tube, box, semiergodic. The conditions for the persistence of approaches are very restrictive; the dispersion of energy and angular momentum among the stars of a group must be very small, and close approaches are present only for particular initial conditions associated with the 'third' integral of motion. Observed old groups do not fulfill these conditions.
