NO2 was measured in the nighttime stratosphere by means of a balloonborne spectrometer, pointing at a bright rising star, in the 427-452 nm range. The tangent ray technique was used to derive the vertical distribution of NO2 at heights of 23-38 km. The concentration was (6 plus or minus 1.5) x 10 to the 9th molecules/cu cm at 25 km, passing through a minimum of (2 plus or minus 1) x 10 to the 9th molecules/cu cm at 29 km, and rising again up to (4 plus or minus 0.8) x 10 to the 9th molecules/cu cm at 32 km.
