An overview is presented of the present status of knowledge on interstellar chemistry. The emergence of the field is reviewed, and the interstellar formation of molecules is briefly discussed. Gas phase reactions in the interstellar medium are examined, and reactions that occur on dust grains are considered. Carbon chemistry in interstellar space is discussed.
