The dynamical behavior of planetary rings is often described in terms of streamline deformations and motions. It is argued here that the standard formula giving the shape of the streamlines involves geometric elements rather than orbital elements, when the oblateness of the planet is taken into account. The authors relate the geometric elements to the orbital elements and derive the differential equations which govern the variations with time of the geometric elements.
