The precise isotopic composition of some elements can be used to decipher the structural evolution and history of a planet. The radiogenic isotope variations are very well adapted to describing histories composed of alternating active and passive periods that involve the processes of differentiation and mixing; this is the basis of their success as geological tracers. Each isotopic tracer carries its own properties and information based on chemical behavior and radioactive decay, but becomes useful only through its linking with other tracers and, beyond that, with major geological processes. This degree of redundancy in isotopic correlation analysis is a key methodological factor.
