Observations made in 1977 of 225 sunspots with diameters larger than 2000 km are used to correlate the location of sunspots at their development maximum with the filaments or faculae observed in the same region during previous rotations. The results show that 25 percent of the sunspots are located at the tip of a previous filament, 35 percent are located at the border of a previous facula, and 17 percent are associated with both previous filaments and faculae. During the course of their evolution, sunspots are found to attain their level of maximum stability at the location occupied by the features associated with them from previous rotations, suggesting that this location is characterized by a point in rigid rotation.
