Direct Fabry-Perot observations of the meridional component of the thermospheric neutral wind at Arecibo, Puerto Rico, are compared with the velocities derived from simultaneous incoherent scatter radar observations. If it is assumed that there are no systematic errors in the atomic oxygen densities predicted by the MSIS-83 empirical model, the velocities determined by the two techniques agree best when the commonly accepted value of the O(+)-O collision cross-section is increased by a factor of 1.7 (+ 0.7, -0.3).
